Center for Physical Activity Research
Non-communicable diseases (NCD) are widespread around the world. Japan has the highest aging in the world. Therefore, it is necessary to take measures not only to prevent disease, but also to extend healthy life expectancy and promote well-being. Physical activity consists of daily activities and exercise, and it has been found that high levels of physical activity and moderate-intensity exercise contribute to the prevention of disease and the extension of healthy life expectancy, and that prolonged sedentary behavior is related to disease incidence. However, the National Health and Nutrition Survey has pointed out that the number of steps and exercise habits, which are indicators of physical activity, are on the decline, and that the decline differs depending on the life course.
The center practice research and support with the following objectives:
1. To clarify the scientific evidence and related factors regarding the relationship between physical activity/ sedentary behavior and the prevention of disease, extension of healthy life expectancy, and well-being.
2. To practice research that increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior among people, to contribute to policy based on the best evidence, and to support local governments and related organizations.
3. Through collaborating with medical institutions, to clarify the relationship between physical activity/sedentary behavior and extending healthy life expectancy/ prevention for aggravation.
Our center collaborates with the Kobe University Graduate School of Health Sciences, and if you meet the requirements, you can earn a Master's (Health Science) or Doctoral (Health Science) degree.
・Laboratory of Physical Activity Guideline
As a hub for universities and research institutions, to generate evidence among physical activity/sedentary behavior, and health, and to contribute to the development of guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behavior by reviewing the evidence, and to practice research and support for social implementation.
・Laboratory of Exercise Epidemiology
Through field surveys and analysis of public data, from an epidemiological perspective, to research and the relationship between physical activity/sedentary behavior and disease prevention (metabolic syndrome, frailty, cancer, dementia, etc.), extension of healthy life expectancy, and well-being, and clarify related factors.
・Laboratory of Well-Being
Improving well-being is an important issue at population decline and changes of social structure. However, the relationship between health, particularly physical fitness and exercise, and well-being is not fully understood. Through field surveys and experimental research, by focusing on the life course, to clarify the relationship between health, particularly physical fitness and exercise, and well-being and to propose a vibrant society.
