2.2. Background and objectives
We ensure that nutrient declarations for general food products and Foods for Special Dietary Uses, including Foods for Special Health, meet legal standards. We measure nutrients and active ingredients using techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. We also research the development, improvement, and standardization of analytical methods for nutrients and active ingredients. Additionally, we conduct research to maintain and enhance the analytical techniques of Japanese institutes that perform nutrient analysis.
3.Overview of our research
I. Food analysis based on the Food Labeling Act and the Health Promotion Act We conduct food analysis in accordance with the Food Labeling Act and the Health Promotion Act. Commercially available processed foods bear nutrient declarations, indicating the content of nutrients such as calories and proteins. To verify the accuracy of these labeled values, national and local governments conduct sampling inspections, and our laboratory is responsible for the actual measurement tests.II. Development and improvement of analytical methods
Quantitative analysis of nutrients and other components is specified to ensure consistent results, regardless of who conducts the analysis. However, in practice, various factors can cause analytical errors. Our laboratory investigates the causes of these errors and conducts research to develop, improve, and standardize more reliable analytical methods.
III. Maintenance and improvement of analytical techniques
In collaboration with the Japan Food and Drug Safety Center, we conduct external quality control surveys of analytical institutions for nutrient components. This helps maintain and improve analytical techniques.
